BIOGRAPHY

BECOMING THE BLACK WIDOW

TW for mentions of child abuse, brainwashing, violence, assault, sex and dubious consent (at best).
In the late 1920s, Natalia Romanova was rescued from a house fire by Ivan Petrovitch, at only four years old. He brought her to a section of the Soviet Department X, called the Red Room, in the Black Widow program, where she was raised and trained in assassination and espionage, until the age of 20. During World War II, as a teenager, she was sent to fight, mostly with sabotage behind enemy lines. Her and the other twenty-seven girls were put through all sorts of abuse through their trainign, and were expected to endure even more as Red Room operatives. They were injected with a serum to keep them young, fast, resilient and youthful, with the side effect of infertile as well. The first stain in her record came during the 1960s. The Winter Soldier was brought in as another operative, and it did not take too long for sparks to fly. Their romance was strictly forbidden, but they fell in love anyway and carried on their affair, even as Natalia was promised to marry a renowned pilot, Alexei Shostakov. She and the Soldier were discovered, and while he was cryofrozen and mindwiped, she was brainwashed into forgetting her past, instead believing herself to be a former ballerina for the Bolshoi, then married off to Alexei, who was aware of this.
When Alexei was spotted as a potential candidate to the Red Guardian program, the Soviet response to Captain America, they were separated. His death was faked, and Natalia, still brainwashed, "decided" to serve her country by signing up to the KGB. There, she became their best operative, and was dubbed the Black Widow. Her masters messed with her memory again, mixing up her real and her fake backstory, making her remember her training but believe she had truly been a professional dancer while undercover, had never left the KGB, and that her marriage with the supposedly deceased Alexei had been born out of love rather than arranged - it is worth noting, however, that Natalia, or the version of herself that she'd been, had truly loved Alexei.
Natalia was such an examplar operative that the leash around her neck began to loosen, barely enough for her to actively question what she was being made to do, and begin to realize they had altered her memories. Unbeknownst to them, she was plotting to escape right under their noses.

BECOMING HERSELF

Opportunity came in 2009, when Hawkeye was sent under SHIELD orders to kill her. Upon realizing she was on the brink of defecting, he recurited her instead. While they both took a lot of heat initially, once SHIELD managed to break the remainders of her programming, it became clear she would be an invaluable asset. Wishing to distance herself from who she used to be, she began introducing herself as Natasha Romanoff. Her reputation was already solidified as Black Widow, though, and wanting to reclaim that title as hers and hers alone, she willingly took it as her codename. In a "you break it, you buy it" mentality, SHIELD assigned her to be Hawkeye's partner, and a lifelong friendship was born from that.
Free from oppressive masters, Natasha began to discover herself, both in a superficial ("I think mint chocolate chip is my favorite ice cream") and a deeper level ("I'm not going to sleep with targets anymore"). Her friendship with Clint Barton, Sharon Carter and Maria Hill were integral to that.
In no time, she and Hawkeye became renowned SHIELD agents. Natasha got her own uniform, a black catsuit with electric golden bracelets, called the Widow's Bite.

AVENGER

The Avengers were put together in 2012 when Earth was threatened by Loki, and Natasha was drawn in motivated by a personal vendetta against the Trickster for having harmed her friend. Turns out that, although she was undoubtedly cut out for espionage, the superhero business suited her as well. The financial benefits certainly didn't hurt either, and with them, Natasha began to seek to make ammends with those she's hurt in the past, or their living relatives. This mostly takes the form of giving them somewhere to hide out, pay off debts, hospital bills, fund prosthetics, or even a monthly allowance if the family is struggling - this is a scheme she calls the Web.
Natasha grew close to her teammates, coming to see them as family. Sometimes she disappears for weeks, yes... but she'll always be there when the Avengers need her, or when the world needs the Avengers.

CURRENTLY

Being an Avenger gave her confidence to try to fly on her own, in an additional effort to atone to her past. When she is not working for SHIELD or for the Avengers, Natasha takes up jobs by herself. They are mostly things SHIELD would not bother with, as well as paying gigs for more funds to invest in her Web. Alternatively, sometimes she just decides that her way to deal with a certain situation is the right way and goes on her own so no one will be up her ass.
Isaiah Ross is her lawyer and manager, and he helps her find these jobs. Additionally, he looks after her cats when she's out of town, along with Clint.
Despite having quarters in the Avengers Tower and in SHIELD, Natasha prefers her own apartment in New York, which she shares with her two cats, Liho and Ponchik. It's a rather rough neighbourhood, but she's made herself at home.
Natasha is very much respected by her fellow SHIELD agents, but she is most definitely not trusted. Whether she is even trusted by all of the Avengers is up to debate. It's something Natasha pretends that does not bother her at all, but it stings a little.
Without regular dosages, the serum she was injected with started to deteriorate in the early 2010s. Although Natasha is still more resilient than most to poisons and drugs, her healing is nearly back to normal. She's developed myopia, and switches between glasses and contacts, the former mostly worn at home and the latter, when out and about. She's also begun to deal with chronic pain, sometimes needing a cane or other mobility aids.

⧗ Natasha served Russia in World War II when she was 16. In the front, she fell in love with a soldier named Nikolai, and married him in secret. They had a daughter, Rose, but she was a stillborn.
⧗ Unless pre-discussed, your character is not supposed to know about her real age, Alexei, how she ended up in the Red Room (only that she grew up somewhere with that name and that it was Bad), or any of the brainwashing, and certainly not about Rose or Nikolai.
⧗ Clint, Nick Fury, Phil Coulson and Maria Hill are the only ones who know about her serum.
